MAC Spokesperson Says: ...little freaked out, intimidated, frightened, right-wing Republican thin-lipped b*tch

That's right, Estee Lauder's little boutique brand M.A.C. Cosmetics' pouty mouth spokesperson Sandra Bernhard is promoting "PlushGlass" by mouthing off and insulting Republican women. Here's the words: "...little freaked out, intimidated, frightened, right-wing Republican thin-lipped bitch". Now go see the disgusting, hate-filled internet video advertisement / commercial.
UPDATE: Looks like Estee Lauder and MAC are running scared from us "thin lipped republican bitches" - they edited the video - like it never ever existed- you know it's a Vast Right Wing Conspiracy and all :) BUT and here's the big BUT the Estee Lauder camp hasn't even bothered to issue an apology (UPDATE Aug.17th -see update #7 for apology from Estee Lauder and what actions they have taken with regards to the Bernhard MAC ad.). Really tacky wouldn't you say? - allow your boutique brand M.A.C to insult at least half your consumer base and then just edit the offending ad and then try to slink away. What no apology? Well, I'll just take my dollars to Borghese - they love their customers and wouldn't think to insult them or turn their lovely dollars away.
In an interesting turn of events - commenter Cody at the Cotillion has found the original ad at YouTube go see it before it's taken down!

Some interesting information: Leonard Lauder (Chairman of the Board @ Estee Lauder) served under President Reagan - I bet he would be interested in learning that his little portfolio gem has hired the services of a hate-monger who out and out attacked every single Republican women with her statement "...little freaked out, intimidated, frightened, right-wing Republican thin-lipped bitch".

I doubt Estee Lauder would turn down the almighty DOLLAR from a Republican Consumer - and by that same logic I doubt M.A.C. would either but they are definitely working hard to alienate a huge portion of their market by employing the enraged, hateful Sandra Bernhard.

I will be looking for the appropriate contact information and will be posting said info here - I think Estee Lauder needs to show Ms. Bernhard the door, yank the ad and apologize profusely to the consumers Ms. Bernhard has insulted and alienated from the Estee Lauder Brands.

Oh, and just to let you know Estee Lauder has a bevy of boutique brands. They include Bobbie Brown, Prescriptives, Origins, Clinique, Michael Kors, Aveda, Donna Karan and so many others - so go look at the list.

UPDATE: Girl on the Right has let me know that there is a "contact us" menu at MAC - pull the 'question" menu down and select "other issue" - let them know how you feel (of course keep it polite but be firm).

UPDATE#2 : My message to MAC:

As a M.A.C. cosmetics user for several years I was disheartened to hear the new PlushGlass internet ad showcasing your spokesperson Sandra Bernhard ranting the following " "...little freaked out, intimidated, frightened, right-wing Republican thin-lipped bitch". I loved MAC because it embodied tolerance and beauty - Ms. Bernhard's hate-filled diatribe does a serious disservice to your mission. I will be copying this message to your parent company Estee Lauder.

I will not purchase another product from MAC or any of the Estee Lauder brands until an apology is issued and Ms. Bernhard is removed as your spokesperson - because she obviously does not espouse tolerance and beauty. Until then I will take my business to a company that truly believes in their values.

UPDATE#3: MAC is getting more exposure for their intolerant spokesperson. Look in the middle column above the Boy George Photo.

UPDATE #4: Contact Estee Lauder and copy them on the message you sent MAC. Just to let you know I added this little tidbit to the Estee Lauder message ( because sometimes the left hand isn't aware of what the right hand is doing):

In case you weren't aware of the internet ad you can see it here:

UPDATE #5 August 16th 2006: WIKIpedia Update to M.A.C and to Estee Lauder Companies to include Ms. Bernhard as the MAC spokesperson and her "divine love" for thin-lipped republican bi....
UPDATE #6 August 17th 2006 MAC Apologizes (sort of):Email apology starts below: (Identifying items have been removed)
Date: 8/17/2006 15:18:44 -0400 From: "MAC Consumer Communications"
Dear XXXXXX,
Thank you for taking the time to contact M.A.C.
The Plushglass Sandra Bernhard video on the MAC website has gotten enormous reaction. Sandra is a provocateur and this is why MAC has worked with her. In monitoring these reactions- we realized there was one sentence that was offending some of our customers- which was not what this video was intended to do. We edited out the one offending sentence out of respect to some of our customers. The MAC philosophy is about embracing and welcoming everyone and celebrating difference- ALL RACES, ALL SEXES, ALL AGES is our credo. "
We appreciate your interest in M.A.C and hope we have the opportunity to serve you in the near future.
Sincerely,
XXXX XXXXXXX Global Consumer Communications

UPDATE #7 August 17th 2006: Link to Sandra Bernhard MAC ad is removed at MAC online. The video can still be accessed directly via the link but only if you know how to get there.
Estee Lauder sent out an email apology (note I haven't personally received one - but reader Shelly @ chezdiva.com shares her's and one of the Cotillion gals also got the same message: ***diva note : notice the big difference in this apology vs the MAC non-apology.
Dear Ms. North,

Plushglass video featuring Sandra Bernhard and we thank you. We have

We apologize for any distress this might have caused you and can assure you that Sandra Bernhard's political views are not shared by our Company. We hope that our response allays any question that you may have had regarding
our Company's intent and commitment to our customers.

UPDATE #8 August 18th 2006: New apology email from MAC (note how it is very similar to the Estee Lauder apology in UPDATE #7 - and a far cry from MAC's original apology in UPDATE #6 - makes one think that the MAC PR guys had a little bit of help in rethinking how to write a true apology and not the ridiculous excuse for the one illustrated in UPDATE 6 above.):

Dear Ms. D,

We want you to know that we have heard you. As a loyal consumer you took
the time to share with us your dissatisfaction regarding the M.A.C.
Plushglass video featuring Sandra Bernhard and we thank you. We have
decided to remove the video from the M.A.C. website.

We apologize for any distress this might have caused you and can assure you
that Sandra Bernhard's political views are not shared by our Company. We
hope that our response allays any question that you may have had regarding
our Company's intent and commitment to our customers.

--I for one am happy that Estee Lauder Inc. did the right thing by removing the offending video and by apologizing to the women who were insulted and alienated by Sandra Bernhard's hate speech in the M.A.C. Cosmetics' "Mouthing Off" ad. Of course I would like to see Sandra Bernhard removed as the PlushGlass spokesperson but only time will tell if she is quietly asked to leave. As for Estee Lauder Inc. I will return to them as a customer and purchase from their many brands - except from MAC since I get the feeling they didn't want to apologize until forced to do so by their parent company, Estee Lauder. One other reason that I will be returning to Estee Lauder Cosmetics now that they have apologized and taken corrective action toward the hateful and offensive MAC internet commercial, is that ELC stands strong and proud by the nation of Israel. Estee Lauder has suffered from arab nations boycotting their products since 2001 because ELC is a friend of Israel - so this Diva will be shopping for a new Estee Lauder lipstick for her not so thin lips :)

UPDATE #8.5 August 18th 2006 : Seem's like there is one little problem yet to be resolved - the link to the video has been removed but the video is still accessible. Here's my reply to the apology e-mail - you might also want to do the same:

Dear Ms. XXXXX,

Thank you for your message. I am happy that Estee Lauder has apologized and taken action to correct the terrible image problem for Estee Lauder created by Ms. Bernhard's hate-filled M.A.C. Cosmetics internet commercial assault on Republican women.

Thank you for removing the link to the video on the M.A.C. website navigation panel however the video is still accessible directly at: http://www.maccosmetics.com/whats_new/plushglass_video.tmpl - leaving that up would give the impression that the problem hasn't been corrected. Perhaps that URL should be redirected to the M.A.C. homepage or better yet to a page with an apology as worded below - I am sure that would be appreciated by your Republican consumer base.

Best regards, CD
