Illegal Immigration in the News

Cross posted from Morning Coffee

Here are a couple stories in the media about Illegal immigration, a topic that seems to have fallen off the radar screen of many media outlets.

The El Paso Times writes about county authorities in 4 states cooperating on enforcing immigration and drug smuggling laws. The Southwestern Border Sheriff's Coalition, with 26 sheriffs from California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, met and discussed a number of topics including El Paso Sheriff Leo Samaniego's Reserve officer program. These officers can do all that regular deputies do, including arresting people, the expanded use of such officers frees up regular officers. KFOXTV also reporting on the subject said that the Coalition was formed to get local Law Enforcement from San Diego to Brownsville on the same page and speaking with one voice on the problems associated with the Mexico/US border.

Cooperation across jurisdictional lines is the only way to effectively combat illegal immigration or any other criminal activity. Putting up virtual walls between local authorities and federal officials does far more to impede law enforcement, than it does in protecting the rights of citizens. We learned that lesson with the tragic results of 9-11. It is a shame that organizations like tha ACLU would have us re-learn that lesson possibly with more tragic results.

1700 miles away in Beufort SC the Island Packet reports on the County Council's efforts to curb businesses from employing illegal immigrants.

The Beaufort County Council took the first step in approving an ordinance that would penalize businesses for employing illegal immigrants.

The County Council unanimously approved an illegal-immigration ordinance in a first reading; the measure requires two more votes before being adopted.

Here is a draft of the proposed Ordinance: Bft Co. Proposed Illegal Immigration Relief Ordinance
